money managers, and found dramatically different philosophies. He discussed lessons that anyone can use to improve their personal finances. He also talked about his efforts to feed the hungry and his personal reasons for being concerned about poverty and hunger in America
The Cost of Mental Illness Treatment
Andrew Sperling, Director of Federal Advocacy, National Alliance on Mental Illness discussed the cost of mental health treatment, and the options available to make
treatment more affordable. He explained how the Affordable Care Act has affected mental
health and substance abuse services. He outlined the most common forms of assistance
provided to employees by larger employers. He also talked about the most common forms of
mental illness.
Headphone Related Deaths
Wearing earphones while walking, biking or driving can be much riskier than most people
think. Richard Lichenstein MD, Director of Pediatric Emergency Medicine Research at the
University of Maryland School of Medicine
recently conducted a study that found that headphone-related deaths
have tripled in the past several years. He explained who is most likely to become a victim and
the reasons that this behavior is so dangerous.

Andrew Sperling
Andrew Sperling is the Director of Federal Legislative Advocacy for NAMI, the National Alliance on Mental Illness. In this position, he leads NAMI’s legislative advocacy initiatives in Congress and before federal agencies. Mr. Sperling works on issues affecting the mental health community with a focus on improving the lives of people with severe mental illnesses.
Since 1994, Mr. Sperling has also served as Co-Chair of the Consortium for Citizens with Disabilities (CCD) Housing Task Force.
Prior to joining NAMI, Mr. Sperling held the position of deputy director of government relations for the National Community Mental Healthcare Council and was a legislative assistant for U.S. Representative Dick Swett (D-NH).
Mr. Sperling earned his bachelor’s of arts degree from Tulane University. After graduating from Tulane, Sperling attended George Washington University where he received a masters of arts, and in 1992, he earned a law degree from the Franklin Pierce Law Center.
