InfoTrak: Preventing Child Abuse
John M. Leventhal, MD, Professor of Pediatrics and Medical Director of the Child Abuse and Child Abuse Prevention Program at Yale Medical School has dedicated his career to the prevention of child abuse. He recently conducted a study that found that the first year of life is the most dangerous for children. He said that parents from any income, educational or social level can be the perpetrators of abuse, largely because they are unprepared to deal with infants’ crying. He believes that educational programs for new parents could help reverse the trend.
InfoTrak: The Shrinking Nest Egg
For many baby boomers, the recession didn’t wipe out their nests egg completely, but it did shrink it considerably. Erin Botsford, financial planning expert, author of The Big Retirement Risk: Running out of Money Before You Run Out of Time discussed the turbulence in today’s economy and how it has changed retirement planning. She explained how people approaching their golden years can assess their financial needs and take steps to ensure a sound retirement.
InfoTrak: Shopping by Smartphone
Aaron W. Smith, Senior Research Specialist with Pew Research Center\'s Internet & American Life Project surveyed 1,000 US adults and found that more half of consumers used cell phones in stores during the holidays. He outlined the most common ways that consumers use their phones as shopping tools.

Dr. John M. Leventhal
Dr. Leventhal graduated from Brown University in 1969 and Tufts Medical School in
1973. Since 1973, he has been at Yale University School of Medicine where he trained
as a pediatric resident and chief resident at Yale-New Haven Hospital and as a Fellow
in the Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholars Program. In 1979, he joined the faculty in the Department of Pediatrics, and since 1992 he has been a Professor with a joint
appointment at the Child Study Center.
Since 1982, Dr. Leventhal has served as Medical Director of Yale-New Haven
Children’s Hospital\'s Child Abuse Committee, one of the oldest such teams in the
country. He also is Medical Director of the Yale Child Sexual Abuse Clinic and the Child
Abuse Prevention Programs at the hospital. He is an active member of several
statewide committees concerning child abuse and prevention and works closely with
child protective services and other state and community agencies. Because of his
commitment to underserved children and families, he has been co-chair of the local
United Way’s Success-By-6 Advisory Council for the last three years.
Dr. Leventhal is recognized nationally for his research in the area of child maltreatment,
where he has focused on the epidemiology of child maltreatment, perinatal risk factors
for abuse and neglect, distinguishing abusive from accidental injuries. He has
published more than 140 articles and chapters and has lectured throughout the United
States and in England, Turkey, and Australia. In 1998, he received the prestigious
Research Award from the Ambulatory Pediatric Association in recognition of his
research on child maltreatment and his mentorship of medical students, residents, and
fellows.
Erin Botsford
