The Guide to Getting Better Work

Today, more than a third of Americans are working in the gig economy--combining short-term jobs, contract work, and freelance assignments. Diane Mulcahy, author of The Gig Economy: The Complete Guide to Getting Better Work, Taking More Time Off, and Financing the Life You Want explained why everyone in today’s workforce needs to recognize and accept its changing nature and prepare for it. She outlined the steps to take to transition to a gig career.

Dealing with Difficult People

Nearly everyone has had to deal with a difficult person, either at work or at home. Sarah Elliston, professional workshop leader and trainer, author of Lessons from a Difficult Person: How to Deal with People Like Us said many people don’t even recognize that they are difficult to deal with. She explained the reasons behind this character trait and how others can help the difficult person understand the consequences of their behavior.

The Fleece Problem

Fleece is a wintertime staple but Melody M. Bomgardner, Senior Business Editor of Chemical & Engineering News, the weekly newsmagazine of the American Chemical Society
said it could be contributing to the next big ocean plastics problem: lint. The lightweight material sheds some of its synthetic microfibers each time it\'s washed, and this lint ultimately ends up in surface waters and in fish and other wildlife. She explained why this is such a concern and what consumers can do to help.

Five years ago, before it was even a thing, Diane created and began teaching an MBA class on The Gig Economy at Babson College. The class gained immediate traction and was named by Forbes as one of the Top 10 Most Innovative Business School Classes in the country.

Diane is an active an enthusiastic participant in the Gig Economy. In between full-time jobs and consulting gigs in private equity and venture capital, Diane has been a Visiting Fellow at Trinity College in Dublin, an Executive-in-Residence at Babson College, and an Eisenhower Fellow. She has taken two different years off to travel around the world.



Diane is currently an author, an Adjunct Lecturer at Babson College, and a Senior Fellow at the Kauffman Foundation. She has previously written and published two books and a widely-read report on venture capital. Her work has been featured in The Economist, The Financial Times, Forbes, Fortune, Harvard Business Review, The Irish Times, The New York Times, The New Yorker, The Wall Street Journal, and numerous industry publications here and abroad. Diane has been interviewed on NPR and Reuters, and speaks at conferences and universities worldwide.



When not working, Diane enjoys reading (mostly non-fiction), writing (only non-fiction), food (eating and cooking), wine, film, yoga, and running. Diane holds undergraduate and graduate degrees from Harvard University. She is a dual EU (Irish) and US citizen. She lives in Boston with her husband Kevin.
