Being diagnosed with a chronic illness can bring on strong negative emotions like shock, despair, grief, loss, and depression. If those feelings are allowed to continue unchecked, people become paralyzed with fear and stress. Richard Cheu\'s book helps people take charge of their emotions using various methods including positive psychology.

Richard Cheu is a former neurophysiologist, Emergency Medical Technician, stress-management consultant and author. An ordained deacon and hospital chaplain in New York City, he provides pastoral counseling at Bellevue Hospital, the Visiting Nurse Service inpatient hospice, and the Mary Manning Walsh Home. As a neurophysiologist and adjunct professor, he taught courses in human physiology to medical, nursing and healthcare students. He has taught at the University of Oregon Medical and Nursing Schools, William Paterson University, Brookdale Community College, Riverview Medical Center and Bellevue Hospital Center. He also received a U.S. Patent for a computerized method for improving visual performance. For 12 years in New Jersey, he was an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) responding to more than three thousand emergency calls. He has conducted stress management courses and seminars for clients such as AT&T, Prudential Insurance, various federal agencies, and at Bellevue Hospital.

A Catholic deacon in the diocese of Trenton since 2003, he serves in the Archdiocese of New York. He is a volunteer chaplain at Bellevue Hospital, a 845 bed facility and level one trauma center that receives over 500 ER patient visits daily. He also conducts the noon service in the Catholic chapel.

He has authored articles in the fields of history, business, health and religion. And, he has been featured in Deacon Digest, The Monitor, U.S. China Review, and Occupational Health and Safety Magazine.

Living Well with Chronic Illness: a Practical and Spiritual Guide is his first book. His next title will be Excluded Americans: the First Generation of American-born Chinese.

Richard Cheu graduated from Lowell High School in San Francisco. An undergraduate research fellow in embryology at Stanford University, he received a B.A. degree in Biological Sciences, and an M.A. in biology with a specialization in endocrinology at the University of Oregon. He was a U.S. Public Health predoctoral fellow in physiology at the University of Oregon Medical School. He received a M.B.A. at the Kellogg Graduate School of Management at Northwestern University. He and his wife live in New York City and have five grandchildren.
